Stefan Sagmeister
La Biennale de Montréal 2009 showcases Open Design, which naturally fits under the theme of the 6th edition, Open Culture
This project benefits from the implication of Austrian designer Stefan Sagmeister, one of the most prominent graphic designers of our times, who now heads up Sagmeister Inc [www.sagmeister.com]. His work, for which he has won numerous awards, focuses on three main areas: music, artistic institutions and social responsibility.
Sagmeister took time out to think about what life has taught him. He produced a diary that resembles a list of some 20 maxims, Things I Have Learned in my Life, So Far. For the past five years, he has been presenting, internationally, various phrases of his collection of observations, in spaces that are usually reserved to advertising.
Designed specifically for Montreal in May 2008, the phrase Obsessions are helpful professionally and inane privately was offered to creators and to the general public for open interpretation. Contest participants selected their own materials (photography, sound, video, crafts, food, animation, sculpture...)
A jury comprised of Melissa Mongiat [laconspirationdubien.com + milkandtales.com], Judith Poirier, teacher at École de Design de l'UQÀM, and Pierre Laramée [commissairesonline.com] has already selected 18 projects among the creative works sent to us through the Internet. However, the exhibition Open Design is a continuous open process. Therefore, projects will be retained during the entire month of May and new works will be presented.
